Study on Compatibility of Completion Fluid Additives with Formate Water Solutions

  • Formate completion fluid is mainly used in Tarim Basin to drill high temperature deep wells with bottom hole temperature to 180℃. Successful drilling of these high temperature deep wells imposes rigorous requirements on the properties of completion fluid, such as thermal stability, viscosity, filtration rate, plugging capacity, settling stability and permeability recovery etc. Selection of appropriate formate completion fluid additives is essential for the completion fluid to have properties satisfying the needs aforementioned. This paper discusses the pattern of compatibility between completion fluid additives and formate water solution, providing a basis on which formate completion fluid additives can be screened and used. The composition of a high temperature high density clay-free formate completion fluid that can be used at 180℃ is also presented in this paper.
